Crank up the rumour mill - an anonymous ‘source’ attending the annual Sony Staff briefing last Friday reports that a PS3 price cut may be in the offing early next year.
According to the unnamed insider - known only by his/her modest codename of ‘Legends’ - Sony Europe Prez David Reeves revealed much during his speech, discussing how the current economic climate would impact on Playstation business (it won’t, much), revelling in the PS3’s installed base being bigger in PAL territories than the 360’s (really?) and announcing that the PS3 would be more competitive on price from March 09 onwards.
That can only mean one thing, can‘t it? Easter traditionally marks a spike in console market fortunes too, so it’d be a good time to move on PS3 pricing - plus it would time with the release of killer app Killzone 2. Yup, it all makes perfect sense from our point of view - perhaps moreso given the spanking the PS3’s likely to receive this Xmas.
Also on show at the event (assuming that this is all 100% kosher) were videos of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm on PSP - both looking very good, by all accounts - and Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3. The latter “amazing” footage demonstrating Kratos fending off a skeletal onslaught before leaping aboard a giant eagle and flying off to Mount Olympus.
So, price cuts and brilliant games in prospect for Sony platforms - it all sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Alas, it may well be just that, and we’ll be keeping the salt-cellar close at hand until Sony makes an official announcement. And let’s not hold our breaths waiting for that to happen, eh…?
