With thousands of records to choose from this year, Guinness decided with Guitar Hero III’s highest score on a single song and GTA IV’s first day release sales as two of their their top ten “Best Record Moments of 2008”.
“Guinness World Records has spent over 50 years chronicling remarkable record-breaking feats and 2008 was one of the best years yet,” said Craig Glenday, Editor-In-Chief, Guinness World Records. “With well over 1,000 claims a week, we were thrilled to validate some of the most jaw-dropping, triumphant and mind-boggling records from around the world.”
Ranked at number three is the highly contested record high score on a single song in Guitar Hero III, which has changed hands four times since the Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition came out in March 2008. Chris Chike reclaimed the record on August 29, 2008 by getting 899,703 points playing the hardest song in the game, “Through the Fire and Flames”, and thereby beating previous holder Danny Johnson’s score of 890, 971 points.
At number six on the list is Grand Theft Auto IV’s historic record-breaking sales over everything else in entertainment, selling 3.6 millions units in 24 hours, earning $310 million, easily surpassing Spider-Man 3 and Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows. Grand Theft Auto IV now holds two record titles, Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. Halo 3 is the second closest for fastest selling video game in 24 hours with $170 million.
